Student Support Services: A Game-Changer in Choosing the Right Training Provider

choosing the right training provider with student support services

In the fast-evolving landscape of vocational education, students are increasingly factoring in more than course content and location when selecting the right training provider.

A groundbreaking report by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) has uncovered a crucial factor that significantly impacts students’ choices: the availability of student support services. The NCVER report, titled “Drivers of Student Training Choices – A Focus on Student Support Services,” reveals that registered training organisations (RTOs) offering robust support services hold a distinct advantage in attracting students.

The Impact of Student Support Services

The comprehensive report, a result of meticulous research, underscores that RTOs providing dedicated student support services hold a stronger appeal for potential students than those that do not offer such provisions. Support services have significance for all students, irrespective of their background or circumstances, with both mainstream students and those from equity groups valuing the availability of these services.

The study found that students value the presence of support services as an integral component of their training provider decision-making process.

Going the Extra Mile: Students’ Willingness to Invest

What’s even more intriguing is that students are inclined not only toward institutions with support services but are also willing to invest financially to access them. This willingness to pay additional costs showcases the importance students place on services like tailored one-on-one assistance and group sessions. This phenomenon signifies that while course costs remain a primary consideration, the availability of support services can sway the balance in favour of certain RTOs.

However, while student support services indeed exert an influence, the primary driving factors in students’ choice of RTO remain course costs, followed by considerations like travel time and course delivery mode.

Insight for RTOs: Promoting Support Services

Simon Walker, the managing director of NCVER, emphasises the pivotal role of student support services: “Although the availability of student support services is not as strong an influence on student training choices as cost, it is clear that student support services are important for students when choosing an RTO.”

To assist students in making informed choices, Walker suggests that RTOs can gain a competitive edge by effectively promoting their available support services online. By offering transparent information about these services, RTOs can better cater to the preferences and needs of potential students.

Facilitating Informed Choices

The implications of the NCVER report are profound, offering RTOs actionable strategies to attract and cater to a broader student demographic. To harness the power of student support services, you can:

  1. Enhance Online Presence: Boost your online presence by accurately representing your support services on websites and MySkills pages. Transparency and ease of access to this information can entice more students to consider enroling.
  2. Inclusive Communication: While highlighting support for specific groups like indigenous students or those with disabilities is essential, general guidance about available support services can broaden the appeal to all prospective students.
  3. Embrace Blended Learning: The preference for blended and online delivery modes, as evident in the experiment, suggests that you can confidently transition courses to these formats, aligning with post-pandemic trends.

In a world where educational choices are becoming increasingly diverse and nuanced, the role of student support services emerges as a pivotal factor. As this NCVER research indicates, RTOs with comprehensive support offerings attract more attention and provide their students with a more holistic educational experience.

Unveiling the Research Methodology

The NCVER report was crafted through a meticulous research process. The NCVER team manually analysed a diverse sample of 100 RTO websites and their social media and MySkills pages. This provided valuable insights into the ways institutions showcase their support services. The findings then informed the design of a discrete choice experiment involving 650 participants aged between 16 and 64. This experimental approach allowed researchers to delve deeper into students’ trade-offs when choosing an RTO.

A Step Toward Better Choices

The research’s executive summary underscores that understanding students’ choices is an ongoing endeavour. By shedding light on the impact of student support services on RTO decisions, this study takes a significant step forward in refining how education institutions approach prospective students. The findings encourage RTOs to revamp their approach, providing comprehensive and accessible information about their support services. This assists potential students in making informed choices and enhances the educational journey for those who choose these institutions.

Conclusion: Shaping the Future of Education Choices

In the dynamic realm of education, student choices hold the power to shape the landscape of training providers. The NCVER’s groundbreaking research provides a fresh perspective on these choices by unravelling the profound impact of student support services. As students seek quality education and a supportive environment, RTOs stand to gain by showcasing their commitment to holistic student development. While the allure of support services is evident, this study reminds us that the journey toward informed decisions is a collaborative effort between education providers and the students they serve.
